Taking Action Against Colorectal Cancer: Observing Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about colorectal cancer, its risk factors, prevention strategies, and the importance of early detection. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in Canada, with thousands of new cases diagnosed each year. This type of cancer affects the colon or rectum and can develop slowly over many years, often starting as precancerous polyps. By educating the public about risk factors, symptoms, and screening options, we can help reduce the burden of colorectal cancer and save lives.

Click here to schedule your screening appointment. Encourage others to do the same and help raise awareness.

Important Update: BC Cancer Breast Screening Notices

Effective April 1, 2026, BC Cancer Breast Screening will update how screening results are communicated to patients.

Letters will only be mailed to patients if follow-up or further action is required. Normal screening results that do not require follow-up will no longer be automatically sent by mail. Reminder letters will continue to be mailed when patients are due for screening or when follow-up is needed.

Patients can still access all breast screening results, including normal results, through the following options:

  • Online via Health Gateway
  • By contacting their health care provider
  • By calling the Breast Screening Services Centre at 1-800-663-9203

For more information, refer to BC Cancer Screening’s Common Reminder and Result Notices Resource for an overview of notices issued to patients and health care providers across all four cancer screening programs.

Burnaby Urgent and Primary Care Centres
Urgent and Primary Care Centres (UPCCs) provide medical care for urgent, non-emergency issues. For life-threatening illnesses or injuries, call 911 or go to the Emergency Department.

UPCCs are for when you are unable to see your family practitioner or access a walk-in clinic in a timely manner. If you do not have a doctor or nurse practitioner, you can receive urgent care at a UPCC.

Find a Doctor
Register to be matched with a family doctor or nurse practitioner.

All BC residents can now register for a family doctor or nurse practitioner in their community through BC’s Health Connect Registry.

When you register, you are added to a centralized registry of primary care providers across your community.

Burnaby Primary Care Network
A Primary Care Network (PCN) is a clinical network of local primary care service providers. The Burnaby PCN brings together the Burnaby, BC community, its Primary Care Providers, and Fraser Health to collectively drive city-wide health and well-being.

Primary Care Providers (PCP) are health care professionals, such as Family Physicians or Nurse Practitioners, who help you manage your health. A long-term relationship with a PCP keeps you healthier; they can treat you when you are sick or help you access more advanced care when you need it.

We also work alongside community organizations and service agencies to connect Burnaby residents, not only with medical care, but with essential social supports as well.

Visit the Burnaby PCN website to find health and wellness supports.

Allied Health Services
Allied health professionals aim to prevent, diagnose, and treat a range of mental and physical health conditions and illnesses as an additional service in consultation with your Primary Care Provider (Family Physician or Nurse Practitioner).

Burnaby PCN Allied Health Services include:
